Ballerina: From The World Of John Wick was reviewed strong, and seemed to have a bit of buzz. That hasn’t flowed through to the box office, though. It is coming in around $25 million for the weekend, according to BoxOfficeMojo. This is down from the $35-$40m projections.
It could still turn a profit, as the budget was a modest (these days!) $90 million and it has made a lot in foreign distribution sales, while pulling in another $26m overseas.
Hollywood could be failing to learn the lesson, yet again, that stereotypes can be true. Men go and watch action movies. Women don’t turn out for them, even if female-led.
It came in second to the Disney behemoth that is the live-action Lilo & Stitch. That is three weekends at number one. It added $33m domestically to its total, bringing it up to $336 million domestically and over $770 million worldwide.
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is going to struggle to turn a decent profit now, with its budget rumored at a staggering $400 million. It has just about made that back, but there is still marketing and distribution costs to pay down. It is now down in third, pulling in $15 million to take it to $149m domestic and $450m global.
Karate Kid: Legends now 57% down in week two of release, with $8.7 million, taking it to $38.6m domestic and $74m globally. With a very contained budget of $45 million, it will do just fine for Sony overall by the time PVOD revenue and other downstreams kick in.
Final Destination: Bloodlines rounds out the top 5, with $6.5m and $123.5m at home and $257m overall, a fine haul for an R-rated horror movie and sequel to a long-running franchise.
Wes Anderson’s The Phoenician Scheme has gone wide after a limited release last week. It scored $6.2m domestically and $18m overall.
Summer season is now upon us, and the next few weeks will see How To Train Your Dragon, Elio, 28 Years Later, and F1 all arrive, before Jurassic World: Rebirth, Superman, and The Fantastic Four release within July. In years gone by, younger versions of Outposters would have looked ahead to a potentially classic summer at the cinema. Not now, though. We are all too experienced and cynical to allow hope into our bitter and twisted hearts.
Can it deliver the box office Hollywood needs?
