Cinema’s favorite madman is at it again. Having spent 30 years making Hollywood fund his extreme sports addiction via the Mission: Impossible franchise, his knees are getting old and his back hurts in the morning, so he needs to find another way to get theatergoers to marvel at his love of danger. Deeper is that project.
Tom Cruise needs less high-impact, more “floaty” dangerous hobbies, like space travel and extreme deep-sea diving. Deeper covers the latter. The story follows an aquanaut who encounters a terrifying force while on a deep dive into a never-before-explored trench.
He will be joined by Ballerina and Blade Runner 2049 star Ana de Armas. The pair had been photographed together, leading to all sorts of tabloid speculation. Turns out they have just been doing dive training and prep together for the project.
Phones don’t work underwater.
Edge of Tomorrow and American Made director Doug Liman joins with Cruise yet again for the project. MGM had the rights, with everyone from Idris Elba to Bradley Cooper lined up. Cruise then grabbed it when the project was up for a move.
The script was originally written by Max Landis, but Cruise has brought in his go-to collaborator, Christopher McQuarrie, to do a rewrite.
All that water work will put it in the $200 million range. Crusie is said to be aiming to complete this before he goes into space for another Liman project.
