It’s official, the Ryan Gosling-led and Shawn Levy-directed “Star Wars” film has both a name and a release date.
Lucasfilm has announced that the film will be titled “Star Wars: Starfighter” and will be launched exclusively in cinemas on May 28th 2027 – timed with the 50th anniversary of the overall franchise.
Gosling himself showed up on stage at the Star Wars Celebration event currently taking place in Japan and showed off a photo his mother sent him of the “Star Wars” bed sheets that Gosling owned when he was just 5.
Gosling says of the film: “This script is so good. It’s filled with so much heart and adventure, and there just really is not a more perfect filmmaker for this particular story than Shawn.”
Additionally, it was confirmed that the film will be a standalone adventure that takes place a few years after the events of “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,” and the movie already is in pre-production with filming to take place this Fall.
Further casting will be announced at a later date. The panel also confirmed that the new trilogy of films from Simon Kinberg is in the works, as are the previously announced films from James Mangold, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and Taika Waititi.
