All the main adult roles for the new version of Harry Potter have been confirmed. HBO has released the full list for their upcoming streaming series adaption based on the best-selling children’s and young adult books by JK Rowling.
Despite weeks of reports and speculations, this is the first official confirmation. Emmy winner John Lithgow will play Headmaster Albus Dumbledore. Lithgow has said this is likely his last gig before retirement as he is 79 years old now and this is a ten-year commitment.
Joining him is Oscar nominee Janet McTeer as Professor Minerva McGonagall, and Paapa Essiedu as Potions Professor Severus Snape. Nick Frost will play Hogwarts gamekeeper Rubeus Hagrid. Just like in the books, the teachers are being cast a bit younger than their movie equivalents.
Thallon in Hamlet at the Royal Shakespeare Company
Also joining them is stage actor Luke Thallon as Defense Against the Dark Arts Professor Quirinus Quirrel, for this school year at least.
In a bit of absolutely inspired casting, Paul Whitehouse (Harry & Paul, The Fast Show) will play school caretaker Argus Filch. Whitehouse is on the left:
No news yet on any of the kids’ casting. Given the profile of the project and the need for safeguarding, it is possible that the main kid’s roles won’t be announced until just before production is due to start. Reports say that over 1000 video auditions a day are being viewed.
Francesca Gardiner, showrunner and executive producer, and Mark Mylod, director of multiple episodes and executive producer, released a statement:
“We’re delighted to have such extraordinary talent onboard, and we can’t wait to see them bring these beloved characters to new life.”
The first of seven seasons of Harry Potter is not expected to appear until 2027.
