A new report at Bloomberg Japan indicates that Toho is set to do a direct sequel to 2023’s “Godzilla Minus One”.

Recently it was reported Takashi Yamazaki, who directed that film, was set to direct the next “Godzilla” movie for Toho but no title or plot details were revealed at the time.

This report, citing a mid-term business plan announced on Monday, says the company plans to “proceed with a sequel to the Academy Award-winning ‘Godzilla -1.0′”. Thus it’s highly likely Yamazaki’s film is one and the same.

The highly acclaimed “Godzilla Minus One,” the second of the live-action Reiwa era movies after 2016’s “Shin Godzilla,” took place in devastated post-war Japan as the country is hit by a new wave of devastation unleashed by Godzilla.

The film won the Oscar for best visual effects and was a major worldwide hit – grossing $116 milion from a $15 million budget. It was the highest-grossing live-action film to debut in Japan during 2023, and became the third highest-grossing non-English-language film in the U.S. market to date.

It also still holds stellar review scores with a 99% (8.5/10) on Rotten Tomatoes from over 200 critics and a 98% (4.8/5) from audiences. Production on the next “Godzilla” is rumored to be aiming for a late 2025 start.
