A report over at Bloomberg Japan says that a sequel to Godzilla Minus One is on the way. It will be a “direct sequel” and will be directed by Takashi Yamazaki, who directed the first film.
The reveal was apparently made in a business plan that was released earlier this week.
Godzilla Minus One was a sensation and an embarrassment to Hollywood. Released as $300 million Hollywood movies were crashing and burning all over the place, even those based on reliable IPs. It won an Oscar for best visual effects and grossed $116 million from a comically reasonable $15 million budget.
Hollywood put its fingers in its ears and said “la-la-la-not listening!”.
Described as “the second of the live-action Reiwa era movies”, it jumped back to a time before 2016’s Shin Godzilla to tell a story set in post-war Japan.
It remains the third highest-grossing non-English-language film in the U.S. and has 99% on Rotten Tomatoes. Meanwhile, nobody is still talking about Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania.
Production on this Godzilla project starts later this year.
