Team Asobi’s “Astro Bot” has swept this year’s BAFTA Games Awards, the title taking five honors including the biggest honor of Best Game from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.
The highly acclaimed platformer, which also won the Game of the Year award in December, also won for best animation, audio achievement, family game and game design.
Another big winner was the Scottish oil rig-set Lovecraftian horror tale “Still Wakes the Deep” which took home three honors including two for lead and supporting performances (Alec Newman, Karen Dunbar) and one for new IP.
Sony had another big winner as well with “Helldivers II” winning the best multiplayer and music awards.
The remainder of the awards were well spread – “Balatro” took best debut game, “Thank Goodness You’re Here” won best British game, “Metaphor: Refantazio” won for best narrative, “Neva” won for artistic achievement, “Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II” took best technical achievement, “Vampire Survivors” took best evolving game, and “Zau: Tales of Kenzara” won best ‘Game Beyond Entertainment’.
“Black Myth: Wukong,” “The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom,” “Call of Duty: Black Ops 6,” “Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2,” “Silent Hill 2,” “Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth,” “Dragon Age: The Veilguard,” “Pacific Drive,” “The Plucky Squire,” “Lego Horizon Adventures,” “Star Wars Outlaws,” “Tekken 8,” and “Paper Trail” all landed nominations but left emptyhanded.
BAFTA began handing out game awards back in 2004 with the original “Call of Duty” and “Half-Life 2” taking ‘Best Game’ in the first two years. Since then the winners have all been acclaimed games but have also been surprises in some cases with small indie titles sometimes winning over big-budget juggernauts.
Those winners have included “Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter,” “BioShock,” “Super Mario Galaxy,” “Batman: Arkham Asylum,” “Mass Effect 2,” “Portal 2,” “Dishonored,” “The Last of Us,” “Destiny,” “Fallout 4,” “Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End,” “What Remains of Edith Finch,” “God of War,” “Outer Wilds,” “Hades,” “Returnal,” “Vampire Survivors” and “Baldur’s Gate 3”.
