The first trailer for “TRON: Ares” launched this weekend to a so far quite positive response, even with the usual round of complaints that come with Jared Leto being in another genre project.

Filmmaker Joachim Rønning is delivering a film in which various digital creations from the Grid make it out into the real world and cause chaos. In this case, Leto’s rogue A.I. named Ares seems to be the instigator of that transition.

Here, Ares is a highly sophisticated program sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission – marking humankind’s first encounter with A.I. beings.

Talking to Empire Online, Rønning has spoken about the plan for the Ares character and how he fits in the overall larger film:

“Not to be too clichéd, but I always thought about him a bit like Pinocchio. Ares wants to be a real boy. We talked a lot about him almost being an infant, discovering the world for the first time, and how we wanted the audience to see the world through his eyes. The little things that we take for granted, or don’t see anymore. That was important, and then a bigger theme for the film is what it takes – what it means – to be human. Especially in this case, because he’s a computer program.”

One key change noticed in the trailer is that Ares sports a triangular identity disc on his back, rather than the traditional circle. It seems the three-sided shape is an upgrade:

“It’s definitely a weapon, and it’s just a superior disc. When you’re a part of a franchise, you want to evolve the design, although I’m sure people are gonna freak out that it’s not round: ‘Oh no!’ But we have round discs as well. Take it easy.”

Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Hasan Minhaj, Jodie Turner-Smith, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan, and Gillian Anderson co-star in the film which opens October 10th.
