After years of delay and all sorts of top-level changes, Amazon MGM is getting down to work on the next Bond adventure.
At CinemaCon in Las Vegas, Head of Film, Streaming & Theatrical at Amazon Courtenay Valenti, alongside global marketing head Sue Kroll, confirmed that producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman are currently in London and have started work. Valenti said:
“We are committed to honoring the legacy of this iconic character, while bringing a fresh, exhilarating new chapter to audiences around the world alongside Amy and David. They are both in London getting started and couldn’t be here tonight, but we wanted to thank them for what we know will be an incredible partnership. Thank you, Amy and David!”
Creative control of the 007 franchise remained with Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli even after the $8.5 billion acquisition of MGM by Amazon. Well-publicized clashes within Amazon meant that no movement had been made on a new Bond installment. This was unblocked when Amazon paid another $1 billion to gain creative control. The fallout is rumored to be part of the reason why Jennifer Salke exited Amazon.
As part of the deal, Amazon, Broccoli and Wilson have formed a new joint venture to house the Bond intellectual property rights, with Broccoli and Wilson remaining co-owners of the franchise.
The new Bond movie is presumed to be among the 16 theatrical films planned by Amazon MGM in 2027.
Rumors were rife in the British tabloid press at the weekend that the new producers are looking at a period-set Bond in the 1960s, or even an origin story for the character set in the 1950s. As previously discussed here at Last Movie Outpost, this would be a terrible strategic mistake for the franchise.
