The theme of a  killer on the hunt at camp is a staple of the Horror genre ascountless films offered up an endless supply of young victims.

In the new film “Hell of a Summer” Finn Wolfhard and Billy Bryk write, direct, and star in the film which is a mix of camp nostalgia and restrained gore and horror.

The usual mix of characters ranging from theater kids, needs, jocks, Influences, posers, and more are featured and soon start falling like flies thanks to a masked killer.

The film is generally restrained on the gore as despite an R-rating it cuts away frequently but does have enough gore to satisfy fans.

My biggest issue was at times the film dragged and seemed closer to a collection of scenes from other films recreated as a series of loosely connected segments.

In the end there was enough to entertain even if the scares were largely restrained and it was a fresh effort from the young cast.

3 stars out of 5.
