Oscar-winning “Anora” star Mikey Madison has reportedly been offered the lead female role in “Barbarian” director Zach Cregger’s “Resident Evil” reboot at Sony Pictures reports World of Reel.
The report doesn’t indicate if Madison will play anyone from the games, but she marks the second potential piece of casting following talk last week of “Euphoria” actor Austin Abrams joining the cast.
The story follows a hapless courier tasked with delivering a package to a remote hospital. He soon finds himself caught in the middle of an outbreak and must fight through hordes of mutated creatures to survive.
The new film is expected to return to the horror roots of the game franchise and move away from the more action-centered approach of the six Milla Jovovich-led movies which grossed $1.28 billion worldwide.
Cregger is both directing and co-writing the script with Shay Hatten (“John Wick: Chapter 3”). The new adaptations also follow two failed adaptations of late – 2021’s “Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City” film which bombed critically and commercially, and 2022’s Netflix series which was quickly cancelled.
Cregger’s next film is the Josh Brolin and Julia Garner-led horror movie “Weapons” which is slated for an August 8th release. The “Resident Evil” reboot will open in cinemas on September 18th 2026.
