British actor and comedian Nick Frost (“Hot Fuzz,” “Into the Badlands”) is reportedly close to a deal to play Hogwarts groundskeeper Rubeus Hagrid in the upcoming “Harry Potter” TV series for HBO.
Should the deal be closed, he would join John Lithgow as Professor Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Professor Minerva McGonagall, and Paapa Essiedu as Professor Severus Snape.
Deadline broke the news, but fans have already been speculating about this possibility after postings from Frost on social media indicated his excitement about an upcoming project. In addition, he recently began following at least two members of the cast.
The network said in a statement to the trade: “We appreciate that such a high-profile series will draw a lot of rumor and speculation. As we make our way through pre-production, we will only confirm details as we finalize deals.”
The late Robbie Coltrane previously played the role of Hagrid across all eight films. Frost will next be seen in the live-action “How to Train Your Dragon” film opening in June.
Based on the hugely popular fantasy books by J.K. Rowling, the new series comes from writer-showrunner Francesca Gardiner and director/executive producer Mark Mylod.
