Netflix has handed out a series order for a live-action “Scooby-Doo” TV series based on the cartoon Great Dane and his mystery-solving human friends Fred, Daphne, Velma and Shaggy.
In the works for nearly a year, the series was created by Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg (“From,” “Citadel”) along with executive producer Greg Berlanti. The former two will serve as showrunners.
The ‘modern reimagining’ is set during a final summer at camp. Ild friends Shaggy and Daphne get embroiled in a haunting mystery surrounding a lonely lost Great Dane puppy that may have been a witness to a supernatural murder.
Together with the pragmatic and scientific townie, Velma, and the strange, but ever so handsome new kid, Freddy, they set out to solve the case that is pulling each of them into a creepy nightmare that threatens to expose all of their secrets.
The property has been adapted into two live-action films before, and had animated and CG animated adaptations, but this will mark the first live-action TV series based on the property.
Sarah Schechter, Leigh London Redman, Andre Nemec and Jeff Pinkner also executive produce for Warner Bros. Television.
Much of the “Scooby-Doo” animated catalogue is currently at Max, unsurprising as Warner Bros. Discovery owns Warner Bros. Television and Hanna-Barbera.
