Back in June last year, shortly after delays due to a malfunctioning $25 million submarine, came word that Christopher McQuarrie’s “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” film was hitting a budget blowout.
A nine-month delay due to the strikes and other delays had ballooned the eighth M:I film’s expenses with one suggestion being the project was approaching nearly $400 million. A report at Puck News shot that claim down, saying the film wasn’t at that point yet – but expenses were “running well over $300 million”.
Since then, further filming took place last year and today while speaking on The Town podcast, Puck’s Matt Belloni says the film has indeed reached the $400 million budget mark.
If that figure stands, then the film would have to generate around $1 billion at the box-office to reach profit, though it’s not clear yet how much that budget can be cut down via tax rebates from the locations it shot in.
The highest grossing ‘Mission’ to date is the sixth film, ‘Fallout’, which pulled in $791 million worldwide. The previous film, “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning,” took in just $571.1 million from a $291 million budget – losing the studio at least $100 million in its theatrical run.
To date, the most expensive film ever made is J.J. Abrams’ “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” which came in at a net cost of $447 million. That film managed to gross $2.1 billion worldwide.
A three-hour cut of the film has been test screened recently ahead of the film’s opening nationwide on May 23rd.
