Filmmaker Barry Jenkins (“Moonlight,” “Mufasa: The Lion King”) has come onboard to direct “Be My Baby,” a biopic about legendary singer Ronnie Spector setup at A24.

Spector grew up in Spanish Harlem and started the girl group The Ronettes with her older sister Estelle Bennett and their cousin Nedra Talley. They were signed by famously volatile record producer Phil Spector and had their breakthrough hit “Be My Baby”.

She later married Spector and then smartly fought for the rights to her music in the subsequent divorce. Eventually she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Zendaya has been attached to play Spector since late 2020 after the late Ronnie Spector hand picked the “Euphoria” actress herself. At the time, Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Jackie Sibblies Drury was slated to write the script based on Vince Waldron’s book.

Things have changed since then with Dave Kajganich (“Bones and All,” “Suspiria”) now tapped to write an original screenplay which said to explore the singer’s life and relationship with troubled producer Phil Spector rather than a more traditional biopic formula.

Marc Platt, Adam Siegel, Mark Itkin, Tom Shelly, Adele Romanski, Mark Ceryak, and Zendaya produce.
