This is such a weird one, as you have heard of Rust, but for all the wrong reasons. What should have been a mildly interesting Western has had lots of free advertising. Here is the trailer.

It’s not giving away much, but looks interesting. Rust stars Alec Baldwin, Travis Fimmel, Frances Fisher, Jake Busey, Josh Hopkins, Devon Werkheiser, Roberto Portales, Chris Gann and Travis Hammer. Joel Souza is the writer and director.

The story is:

A boy left to fend for himself and his younger brother following their parents’ deaths in 1880s Kansas goes on the run with his long-estranged grandfather after he is sentenced to hang for the accidental killing of a local rancher.

Seriously, the story is about an accident killing. Isn’t it weird when art imitates life? The trailer shows Baldwin, who plays the lead character, Harland Rust. Does he show the kid how to accidentally shoot the local rancher as well?

Rust premiered in November at the EnergaCamerImage Film Festival. Baldwin has said he doesn’t want to see the final cut. While talking to Variety, he said:

“I haven’t seen the film. Only because this is obviously the most difficult thing I’ve ever dealt with in my life. Beyond the victims themselves, the thing that most pains me is what it did to my wife. My wife has been very, very traumatized from this. There has been a lot of pain.”

“When you are married to somebody and everything was going fairly well and we had seven kids … and the floor falls out. It’s very frightening and very disturbing. And we are trying to get the wind in our sails, to get away from this stuff. Because the film doesn’t stand by itself. It’s always going to be overshadowed by this.”

The movie will always be remembered for the accidental shooting and killing of Director of Photography, Halyna Hutchins. As part of the settlement in the civil lawsuit, Hutchings’ husband became an executive producer. Any proceeds from the movie will go to Hutchings’ son.

Bladwin has said that he doesn’t want people to think he’s profiting from the movie or the accident.

Rust will be in theatres and on streaming, on the 2nd of May.
