Wait? There were already three of them? Seriously? The first Meet The Parents was a diverting enough, unassuming, and inoffensive comedy. Somehow it grossed more than $330 million on a $55 million budget.

There were then, apparently, two sequels. Meet The Fockers and Little Fockers. Somehow, possibly because of the metric system or something, the franchise has grossed over a billion dollars so far.

The first movie was itself a remake of a 1992 independent comedy directed by Greg Glienna who also played the lead. At one point, Steven Spielberg was going to direct the remake with Jim Carrey in the lead role.

Now, John Hamburg (Me Time) is negotiating to direct a 4th installment in the franchise. Hamburg contribution to the screenplay of the 2000 movie and both sequels. He will also write this entry.

Jay Roach, who directed the first two, returns as a producer. Robert DeNiro and Ben Stiller will also be back alongside Teri Polo and Blythe Danner. No word yet on Hoffman or Streisand.

Fun movie fact about the 2000 version. In the 1992 original the lead character did not have a surname. The name was written into the script after Jim Carrey came up with the idea for the Focker surname during a creative session held before he left the project.

The MPAA questioned the surname Focker as an expletive. As it was used repeatedly in the movie they were to apply an R rating.

The filmmakers protested, and they had to prove that such a name really existed. The studio submitted to the MPAA a list of real people with the surname Focker which ensured that the film retained a PG-13 rating.
