If you’re not reading Mortal Kombat in a very loud voice,  with the music kicking in, you’re doing it wrong. The original MK game came out in 1992 and was a smash hit, with the franchise now selling over 26 million copies worldwide.

I had to post that, because it gave me an earworm, so I’m just passing it on. That is a banging soundtrack though. Do the kids today still say banging?

Mortal Kombat had about 42 million sequels to the game, card games, an animated series, a comic book, movies and TV shows. The first movie, in 1995, was directed by Paul W. S. Anderson. A reboot came out in 2021, and people seemed to like it.

The original movie was only a PG-13, so missed a lot of what made Mortal Kombat so appealing; the over-the-top gore and finishing moves. The 2021 was rated R for violence, lots and lots of violence.

A squeal to the 2021 version has been in production for a while. Original photography was finished in January 2024, but there have been hold-ups due to strikes and some reshoots.

Mortal Kombat II has more of the original cast from the first one, Hiroyuki Sanada, Lewis Tan, Jessica NcNamee, Josh Lawson, Mehcad Brooks and Tananobu Asano. Karl Urban joins the cast this time, as Johnny Cage (and not Johnny Cash as I originally thought).
