Emmy winner Matthew Macfadyen (“Succession,” “Ripper Street,” “Deadpool & Wolverine”) is attached to star as legendary literary spymaster George Smiley in the new TV series “Legacy of Spies” which is being produced by The Ink Factory and Fifth Season.

“Silo” creator Graham Yost is executive producing the potential series which will be based on author John le Carré’s series of novels that include the main character from the iconic novel “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” and a supporting one in the just as famous “The Spy Who Came In From The Cold”.

The title refers to the 2017 novel that serves as both a prequel and sequel to those aforementioned works. The TV series will reportedly be crafted out of all the various Smiley related published works (novels such as “Smiley’s People,” “The Honorable Schoolboy,” etc.) as well as some unpublished materials.

Ink Factory owns the rights to le Carré’s work and multiple scripts have been written by co-founder Stephen Cornwell and Clarissa Ingram. The project is being shopped around and drawing interest from potential buyers.

Macfadyen would mark the fourth screen incarnation of the character following Rupert Davies in “The Spy Who Came in from the Cold” film in 1965, while Alec Guinness and Gary Oldman portrayed him in the “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” 1997 mini-series and 2011 film respectively.

The Ink Factory previously adapted le Carre’s “The Night Manager” and “The Little Drummer Girl” to series, and “A Most Wanted Man” to film. They’re also planning new straight up adaptations of “The Spy Who Came in From the Cold” and “The Constant Gardener” as series.
