Marvel Studios’ “Daredevil: Born Again” sees the welcome return of actor Jon Bernthal to the role of Frank Castle/The Punisher.

The former “The Walking Dead” alum took on the role of the grieving father who becomes a violent vigilante in the second season of the Marvel-Netflix “Daredevil” series before going on to his own two-season series from 2017-2019.

Years later, he returns to the role for the currently airing series and is coming back for its second season which has just begun production. That’s not all though.

A few weeks back came the news Bernthal would also be reprising the role for a “The Punisher” standalone special from Marvel Television. In fact, Bernthal would also be co-writing the special alongside filmmaker Reinaldo Marcus Green who directs it.

Appearing at SXSW to promote “The Accountant” sequel, Bernthal tells THR that there are no plans to lighten or compromise the material and his Frank Castle will be :

“I care very deeply about Frank, I’m really grateful that I’m getting the opportunity to tell the story that I think the fans deserve. We’re giving it our all and we’re trying to tell a Frank Castle story that we’re going to turn our back on the audience – it’s not going to be easy, it’s not going to be light, and I think it’s the version that this character deserves and I’m just beyond honored and grateful that we get the opportunity.

It’s going to be dark; Frank has no interest in breaking out the darkness. It’s not going to be easy. I don’t know if that’s the Netflix tone then that’s what it’s going to be., It will not be Punisher-lite, I promise you that.

“The Punisher” special is expected to air sometime in 2026. “The Accountant 2” will hit cinemas on April 25th.
