Hollywood has continued to be on something of a downward spiral, with even recognised IPs throwing up expensive flops. Part of the problem is that movies are just too damned expensive these days and, when even an average actioner costs more than $200 million, the hurdle bar for profit is high. Are actors recognising that their massive salaries are part of what is threatening their entire industry?
Are they f*ck!
Forbes has released their annual list of the highest-paid actors, and a usual suspect is at the top of the list. Dwayne Johnson was once again the #1 paid movie star in 2024.
He banked $88 million with a fee for Red One at $50 million, a paycheck for Moana 2, and a whole stack of residuals.
Ryan Reynolds was at #2 with $85 million, and Kevin Hart at #3 with $81 million.
Quite a long way back was Jerry Seinfeld with $60 million, Hugh Jackman with $60 million, Brad Pitt with $32 million, then George Clooney with $31 million.
For the ladies, Nicole Kidman was the highest-grossing female at #8 with $31 million. Others in the top ten included Adam Sandler with $25 million and Will Smith with $25 million.
Tom Cruise did not have a big movie out last year Top Gun: Maverick was out of theaters, and he was deep in production on Mission: Impossible 8.
The points on back catalogs were the gift that keeps on giving for the real top earners, but movie budgets remain bloated out of all reason even when adjusted for inflation.
