Disney’s live-action “Snow White” finally hits cinemas in about a month, hopefully marking an end to a long and winding road for the production which has been the subject of multiple controversies.

Some of those have been about casting choice, some about the handling of the films’ obviously CG dwarves, some of the usual backlash that comes with any Disney live-action adaptation, and some reaction to interview quotes by the film’s star Rachel Zegler regarding the original film’s story.

As time has gone on and more from the film has been shown off, the controversies have faded somewhat as we’re now more aware of what the filmmakers are trying to achieve.

Speaking with Vogue Mexico, she says she’s taking the backlash against the film in stride, saying the overprotective reaction comes from fans with true passion for the original. Here’s her comments (translated from the original by THR):

“I interpret people’s sentiments towards this film as passion. What an honor to be a part of something that people feel so passionately about. We’re not always going to agree with everyone who surrounds us and all we can do is our best.

I understand that the conversation comes from the community not wanting to be seen as a monolith, but the reality of being Latino and working in this industry is that we try to represent the entire diaspora. I know where I’ve been, I represent it in my narrative, and I carry it in my heart every day. No one can ever tell me that it’s not a part of me.”

The film also stars Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen and Andrew Burnap as Jonathan. Erin Cressida Wilson wrote the film which features all-new original songs from Benj Pasek and Justin Paul and an original score composed by Jeff Morrow.

The new “Snow White” opens March 21st.
