Sean Baker’s “Anora” was the toast of the 40th annual Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday afternoon with three wins.
The film snagged the top award of best feature along with best lead performance for Mikey Madison and best director for Baker. Jesse Eisenberg’s “A Real Pain” won for best screenplay and best supporting performance for Kieran Culkin.
“Flow” took best international film, “No Other Land” best documentary, and “Girls Will Be Girls” won the John Cassavetes Award for best sub-$1 million budget film.
Sean Wang’s “Didi” won for best first feature and best first screenplay, while Maisy Stella won for best breakthrough performance for her work in “My Old Ass”.
“Nickel Boys” won best cinematography, “September 5” best editing, and “His Three Daughters” won the Robert Altman award.
On the TV front, “Shogun” won best scripted series, “Hollywood Black” won best documentary series, “How to Die Alone” won best ensemble cast, while “Baby Reindeer” saw its actors Richard Gadd, Jessica Gunning and Nava Mau win the lead, supporting and breakthrough performance awards respectively.
