The Brutalist is doing well in the award ceremony season. It’s had 10 Oscar nominations, including Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Director and Best Film. With all that success though, the director Brady Corbet, said he’s made no money.
In a recent interview, he said:
“I’ve spoken to many filmmakers that have the films that are nominated this year that can’t pay their rent. I mean, that’s a real thing.”
He went on to say that, this week, he’s “made zero dollars”, even though The Brutalist has been collecting awards like Quinten Tarantino collects feet pics. He also said that he and his wife, and creative partner, Mona Fastvold, have made zero money on the last two movies they made. Before The Brutalist, Corbet and Fastvold made Vox Lux (2018).
Potless!
The couple went on to clarify their comments and said they have been living on a paycheque from three years ago. He’s also directed a few adverts in Portugal, to get some money in from somewhere.
Corbet went on to explain that directors don’t get paid for promoting a film. Talking about promoting The Brutalist, he said:
“…if you look at certain films that premiered at Cannes, that was almost a year ago…I mean, our film premiered in September. So I’ve been doing this for six months. And had zero income because I don’t have any time to go to work. I can’t even take a writing
job at the moment.”
He said that the promotion circuit feels like “a six-month interrogation”. In the last week, he had over 90 interviews with different people. He should count his blessings that he didn’t have one with me. For the past six months through, promoting The Brutalist, he’s been basically working for nothing.
