After many, many years stuck in development hell, it seems like there may finally be some progress on the long-awaited sequel to “The Goonies”.
Potsy Ponciroli (“Old Henry”) has reportedly been hired to pen the script for the follow-up, though story details are under wraps and no director is currently attached.
Steven Spielberg, Chris Columbus, Kristie Macosko Krieger and Holly Bario will produce and Lauren Shuler Donner is executive producing.
The upgrade to the development status of the film comes two weeks after a cast reunion at TCL Chinese Theatres which celebrated Ke Huy Quan’s hand and foot imprint ceremony.
The iconic film, now nearing its 40th anniversary, followed a group of kids who embark on a pirate treasure hunt to save their homes from foreclosure. They encounter booby traps and a villainous crime family along the way.
Josh Brolin, Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Martha Plimpton, Jeff Cohen, Kerri Green, Joe Pantoliano and Quan starred. Talk of a sequel has been swirling for many years but never seemed to go beyond just talk.
