It has been a very busy weekend for industry awards with the Producers Guild (PGA) Awards, Director’s Guild (DGA) Awards, and the animation-centric Annie Awards all handed out.

The big winners this weekend were Sean Baker’s “Anora” and Dreamworks Animation’s “The Wild Robot,” both were among the best-reviewed films of last year and they scored the top honors in their respective categories at these awards ceremonies.

“Anora” took Best Picture at the PGA Awards, “The Wild Robot” taking best animated feature, “Super/Man” best documentary film, “Shōgun” best drama series, “Hacks” best comedy series, “Baby Reindeer” best limited series, and “STEVE! (martin) a documentary in 2 pieces” best docuseries.

It was a similar story at the DGA Awards celebrating directing in works. “Anora” took the top prize of Best Picture, “Nickel Boys” best debut feature, “Porcelain War” best documentary, “Shōgun” best drama series, “Hacks” best comedy series, “Ripley” best limited series.

Baker used his DGA winning speech to call on all filmmakers to demand that studios give their films “at least” 90 days of theatrical exclusivity:

“Let’s do whatever we can do to expand that theatrical window. Demand it. We make films for the big screen. Let’s expand it to at least 90 days […] Let’s get it back to the way it used to be.”

At the Annies, “The Wild Robot” took Best Animated Feature along with a host of ‘Outstanding Achievement’ awards for things like character design, character animation, editorial, music, production design, animated effects and more.

It dominated the film categories, but one or two others got in – most notably “Flow” taking Best Animated Feature – Independent. Netflix’s “Arcane” dominated the ‘Outstanding Achievement’ awards for television titles, while “Orion and the Dark,” “Dream Productions,” and “Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur” also scored honors.

“Anora” is now the clear favorite to take the Best Picture Oscar while “The Wild Robot” looks highly likely to take the Best Animated Feature Oscar.
