There’s a lot of love for the first two films in Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight” trilogy, but its closer “The Dark Knight Rises” remains a more divisive work. Despite the critical acclaim being very high, audience response is more varied – some adore it, some loathe it.

All seem to agree though that it has some issues, especially in its third act once Batman returns to Gotham. One of those is the villain reveal and death involving Marion Cotillard’s character. After playing mostly as a rather plain supporting character for much of the film, Miranda/Talia is revealed as the puppet master of Bane (Tom Hardy) – but it’s a little underwhelming.

Still, that scene fares better than her character’s death which sees her succumbing to injuries sustained in a major vehicle smash. As character death scenes go it’s… not good, and strikes as a rare bum note from the otherwise fairly meticulous Nolan.

Now, speaking with France TV recently, Cotillard was asked about the sequence and appeared to take most of the responsibility for how it turned out: “I couldn’t find the right position. I was stressed. Sometimes it happens, we screw something up. And this, I screwed up.”

Cotillard has spoken on the record before about this, revealing in an interview nearly ten years ago saying it was “tough to be known just for this scene”. However, Nolan himself still approved that take going into the final cut so it’s certainly not all on her.

Whereas “Batman Begins” set the template for pretty much every reboot of a property you’ve seen in the past twenty years, while “The Dark Knight” has become a truly iconic piece of cinema in any genre, ‘Rises’ remains something of the ambitious black sheep of the trilogy and time doesn’t seem to have either improved or worsened overall perception of the film.
