DreamWorks Animation and Universal Pictures’ family film “Dog Man” is retaining the box-office crown in its second weekend, the title set to take in $13.7 million. That pushes the film’s domestic total to $54 million, well past its cost-efficient $40 million budget.
The film held off two major newcomers over what is expected to be a rather dead weekend thanks to the Super Bowl. Moviegoing on Sunday is expected to plummet as people stay home to watch the big game.
“Heart Eyes,” a romantic comedy slasher film from “Werewolves Within” director Josh Ruben, looks set to take second place with $8.5-10 million. The Mason Gooding and Jordana Brewster-led film has received pretty good critical reviews, but only a B- CinemaScore.
The Ke Huy Quan action film”Love Hurts” is opening in third place with an expected $6 million. The film has not had a good reception, widely panned by critics and audiences aren’t clicking to it either – giving it a C+ CinemaScore.
Fourth will likely be Disney’s “Mufasa: The Lion King” with a further $4.2 million, while the well-reviewed “Companion” should be in fifth with $3.4 million. “One of Them Days” is sixth with $3.4 million and “Flight Risk” is seventh with $2.7 million.
The doco “Becoming Led Zeppelin” is coming in eighth with $2.6 million, while “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” and “Moana 2” round out the top ten with $1.76 million and $1.6 million respectively.
