Reese Witherspoon has offered an update on “Elle,” the TV series prequel to the “Legally Blonde” films currently in the works at Amazon Prime Video.
In an interview with People, Witherspoon says they’re currently in the casting process right now and “we’re picking who is going to play the young me. It’s kind of a trip.”
She adds that production is slated to begin in March and so far she’s thoroughly enjoyed watching all the girls who’ve tested to play her younger incarnation:
“It’s so exciting too, to watch these young girls that are so filled with enthusiasm and excitement and completely. There’s so many good ones. That’s the hard thing because there’s so many good people to choose from.”
Witherspoon starred in the original films as Elle Woods, a sorority girl who heads to Harvard to win back her ex-boyfriend. She ends up studying to become a lawyer and discovers her newfound independence.
The first film led to a $141 million box-office gross on an $18 million budget, and spawned both a sequel and Broadway musical.
The Amazon series follows Elle Woods in high school as we learn about the life experiences that shaped her into the iconic young woman we came to know and love.
Laura Kittrell (“Black Monday”) serves as showrunner and executive producer while Witherspoon will executive produce with Lauren Neustadter, Lauren Kisilevsky, and Marc Platt.
