Marvel Studios’ upcoming “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” animated series debuts in a few hours on the Disney+ service. While reviews aren’t out yet, reaction so far on social media has been quite good.

As the film isn’t set in the same universe as the MCU (ie. Earth-616), it is allowed to shake things up and show off new versions of characters potentially quite different to the ones we’re familiar with from either the MCU Spider-Man films or the prior ones.

That caused some initial concern for actor Hudson Thames, who voices Peter Parker/Spider-Man. Speaking with Collider, the actor spoke of his fears for the show and relief once he read the scripts:

“I thought it was awesome. I mean, my biggest fear was that it was gonna be annoying and woke, and it wasn’t, and I was like, ‘Yes, this is great, it’s so well written,’ like it feels real. I’m the oldest of five boys, so I feel like I kind of know what’s happening in their lives and in high school, and it felt like it was doing that justice.”

The comments have already led to a debate on social media – some saying Spider-Man the character is inherently ‘woke’ by his tendency towards social justice, while others have criticised the actor’s remark for being dismissive of progressive themes.

It has also led to some indicating they’ve changed their mind about their intentions of watching the series – some now planning to switch off, others planning to switch on. Thames has been voicing Peter Parker for Marvel Studios since early episodes of “What If?”

“Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” debuts on Disney+ on January 29th with an eight episode run airing over the next four weeks.
