The first trailer has been released for the remake of “Brokeback Mountain” and “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” director Ang Lee’s famed 1993 comedy “The Wedding Banquet”.
The new take follows two queer couples – gay couple Chris (Bowen Yang) & Min (Han Gi-chan), and lesbian couple Angela (Kelly Marie Tran) and Lee (Lily Gladstone) – living under the same roof.
Angela and her partner Lee have been unlucky with their IVF treatments, but can’t afford to pay for another round. Meanwhile, their friend Min, the closeted scion of a multinational corporate empire, has plenty of family money but a soon-to-expire student visa.
When his commitment-phobic boyfriend Chris rejects his proposal, Min makes the offer to Angela instead: a green card marriage in exchange for funding Lee’s IVF. But their plans to quietly elope are upended when Min’s skeptical grandmother flies in from Korea unannounced, insisting on an all-out wedding extravaganza.
Joan Chen and Youn Yuh-jung co-star in the film which is directed by filmmaker Andrew Ahn (“Spa Night,” “Fire Island”). The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival to very good reviews and suggests its more emotional than the original which skewed more comedic than this.
Bleecker Street will release the new “The Wedding Banquet” in cinemas on April 18th.
