A feature piece at Deadline on box-office projections for Marvel Studios’ “Captain America: Brave New World” has indicated that the film’s budget was under tighter control than expected.
The trade says the film is currently on track for a $90-95 million haul over the four-day Presidents Day weekend.
That will be behind several other Marvel heroes that opened in that slot, including the debuts of “Black Panther” ($242.2 million), “Deadpool” ($152.1 million), “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantamania” ($120.4 million). It will actually be about on par with 2015 President’s Day weekend non-Marvel opener “Fifty Shades of Grey” ($93.1 million).
The more surprising reveal in the piece is that they indicate the film has a relatively modest (by Marvel standards) production budget of $180 million. That’s before marketing and P&A spending.
It’s a surprising number, considering the film has reportedly undergone extensive reshoots following the rumors of negative test screenings. Completely redone sequences and all-new characters like Giancarlo Esposito’s Sidewinder were added in those reshoots.
The figure is on par with “Thor: Ragnarok,” just ahead of “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” at $170 million, and considerably behind the $250 million spent on “Captain America: Civil War”.
“Captain America: Brave New World” opens in cinemas on February 14th.
