Just one day after “Werwulf” was revealed his next film after the success of “Nosferatu,” filmmaker Robert Eggers has closed a deal to write and direct what is essentially a “Labyrinth 2” film at Sony’s TriStar Pictures.
Deadline broke the news, saying that while story details are under wraps, their sources indicate the film is a sequel to the 1986 musical fantasy classic rather than a remake or reboot of the property which have been in the works for years.
Eggers is writing the script with Sjón (“The Northman”), with whom he’s also working on the script for the 13th-century UK-set “Werwulf.” Chris and Eleanor Columbus will produce the new “Labyrinth” alongside Lisa Henson, with Brian Henson executive producing.
Attempts to start a new “Labyrinth” have been underway for nearly a decade. “Guardians of the Galaxy co-writer Nicole Perlman penned a spin-off in 2016, while Maggie Levin (“Into the Dark”) worked on a sequel in 2020 – neither version seems to have gone beyond development.
A report emerged back at Christmas suggesting Eggers was involved in writing and directing a reboot of the original. Eggers was asked about this earlier this week and played coy – not denying it but suggesting it was one of several projects he has in development and wouldn’t be next.
Jennifer Connelly starred in the original as a teenager who has to navigate a fantastical and otherworldly maze in order to save her young infant brother, kidnapped by a goblin king Jareth (David Bowie). She encounters various creatures and challenges on the way.
The Robert Eggers-directed “Labyrinth 2” likely won’t go into production until either late 2026 or 2027 due to his “Werwulf” filming commitments.
