Incoming U.S. President Donald Trump has named Jon Voight, Sylvester Stallone, and Mel Gibson as his ‘special ambassadors’ to Hollywood.
In a posting on his Truth Social platform on Thursday, the President-elect says the three actors – all of whom have been vocal in their support of Trump – have been appointed “Special Ambassadors to a great but very troubled place, Hollywood, California.”
The aim of the gig for the trio is to help boost domestic production of film and TV shows, trying to bring back runaway productions as the entertainment industry has increasingly opted to shoot in other countries for budgetary reasons. Trump says in his posting today:
“They will serve as Special Envoys to me for the purpose of bringing Hollywood, which has lost much business over the last four years to Foreign Countries, BACK—BIGGER, BETTER, AND STRONGER THAN EVER BEFORE!. These three very talented people will be my eyes and ears, and I will get done what they suggest. It will again be, like The United States of America itself, The Golden Age of Hollywood!”
It’s not clear what the actors will actually do, or be able to do, to boost production in the country. Multiple industry trade groups have long been lobbying for federal-level production tax incentives to bring production back to the United States.
Gibson was blacklisted from Hollywood for roughly a decade for antisemitic comments but has made inroads back in and has the new feature “Flight Risk” coming out next week. Stallone currently stars on Paramount+ series “Tulsa King” and co-wrote David Ayer’s new movie “A Working Man”. Voight was last seen in Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis” last year.
