Warner Bros. continues its mission to leverage every single part of its IP. Harry Potter is rebooted for television. The new DCU kicks off in the summer with Superman. Now, an article in Deadline covering the strategy and plans of Warner Bros. Discovery has highlighted efforts to launch new entries for The Goonies and Gremlins.
The new Gremlins is said to involve original writer Chris Columbus. There has already been an animated series on Max – Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai – which featured original director Joe Dante as a consulting producer. No news on Phoebe Cates yet but a generation of boys waits with bated breath.
Some kind of sequel to The Goonies has been rumored for years, and the rumors have continued despite the death of Richard Donner. Maybe a sequel can explain how a new country club can foreclose on private property, but it can all be averted by a handful of yet-to-be-valued items of unknown ownership while on a beach? It can have a second story thread about the ongoing multi-year custody battle over a deformed adolescent who may be an accessory to a crime.
The most likely approach has long been a nostalgia-based legacy sequel featuring the returning actors and their children somehow getting caught up in more adventures around the treasure of One-Eyed Willie.
Early development is underway on both projects.
