After wrapping “Gladiator II” last year, Ridley Scott had multiple projects with his name attached to them and a Bee Gees biopic looking to be next to go.
Then, by the time his swords-and-sandals epic made it to screens, news came that a movie titled “The Dog Stars” would be next for him and would see him reunite with actor Paul Mescal.
That film has seen a leading man shift with Jacob Elordi now taking on the lead role due to Mescal’s commitments to Sam Mendes’ Beatles movies – otherwise Scott is readying to go on that.
So what happened with that BeeGees movie? Speaking with GQ Magazine today, Scott explained that there was an issue at the studio that was going to take time to work out and Scott wasn’t going to wait around:
“The deal—the studio changed the goalposts. I said, ‘You can’t do that.’ They insisted. I said, ‘Well, I’m going to warn you, I will walk, because I will go on to the next movie.’ They didn’t believe me, and I did. I was being asked to go too far, and I said, ‘No. Next!’ They didn’t like my deal. So I said, I’ll move on. I’m expensive, but I’m f—ing good.”
Scott says he still hopes the issues will be sorted out and hopes he can film the movie later this year. He adds that he wants to show off the “working-class side of the Bee Gees. It’s all about competition with brothers” and then how it was impacted by the loss of Andy who overdosed at 30.
