Has the enduring mystery of Jack The Ripper finally been solved? Has his identity finally been revealed? And why are we writing about this on a movie and entertainment website?

Well, Jack The Ripper is a staple of movies, entertainment and pop culture for as long as any of us can remember.

From straight up horror like Hands Of The Ripper, to time travel oddities like Time After Time, From Hell through to DC animation like Gotham By Gaslight, the Ripper has always been there.

Frequently at the core of stories about him is the speculation over his true identity. There were many suspects, from local surgeons to members of the Royal Family. Many have been hinted at, but none confirmed.

That could all be about to change. New DNA evidence has emerged that may finally identify the killer.

Jack The Ripper has been such an enduring macabre legend because he was the first serial killer to operate after the “News Revolution”, when cheap and widely distributed newspapers became available throughout the British Empire.

The legend spread, fast.

At least five women were murdered by an unidentified serial killer during the autumn of 1888 in the Whitechapel district of London. The case went unsolved for more than 130 years.

A fresh inquest may now be launched after a author and Ripper researcher named Russell Edwards purchased a shawl at auction.

The shawl was said to have been found on the body of the fourth victim, Catherine Eddowes.

Modern DNA testing has found evidence of both her DNA and that of another person – Aaron Kosminski.

Kosminski was a Polish barber and was a suspect at the time, but he was never arrested because police had no firm evidence linking him to the killings.

Karen Miller, 53, three times great granddaughter of Eddowes, was  provider of her DNA for the test.

She has now started a campaign for an inquest to finally resolve the issue.

Descendants of the Ripper’s other victims – Mary Ann Nichols, Annie Chapman, Elizabeth Stride and Mary Jane Kelly – have also backed the campaign.

The coroner in the original 1888 inquest returned a verdict of “wilful murder”.

After all this time, the speculation may finally be at an end.
