Joe and Anthony Russo are returning to direct the next two “Avengers” movies, something of a homecoming for the pair who directed the second and third “Captain America” films and the third and fourth “Avengers” films.
Both Marvel and the Russos themselves have faced rockier roads in recent years due to some notable failures amidst a few success stories. The MCU’s failures have been well documented – culiminating in a rather bad year for them in 2023 on the big screen.
The Russos have had some luck with producing films like “Extraction” and Oscar-winner “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” but their directorial efforts like “Cherry” and “The Gray Man” haven’t worked out so well.
Ahead of their newest work arriving, the big budget “The Electric State” hitting Netflix in March, the pair spoke with Empire and explained their return to Marvel:
Anthony Russo: “Endgame was the end, and it took a little time for us to begin to think about it as something other than an end. We’re very close with Kevin and Lou [D’Esposito] and the entire Marvel team and we’ve had conversations through the years.
We’ve talked about a lot of ideas. Really what happened was, we ended up stumbling upon an idea that activated all of us. You couldn’t see it coming until it came, and once it came it was like, ‘Well, that’s a story we need to tell.’”
Joe Russo: “There were ideas that we were trying to wrap our heads around that preceded this one, and we just never found the story…I remember calling [writer Stephen McFeely] and said, ‘Hey, crazy idea. What do you think if we all go back and do Secret Wars? [Stephen] was like, ‘F— no. Absolutely not.’ And then you hung up. And the next morning at 7.30 you called and were like, ‘Alright, I have an idea.’”
Filming on “Avengers: Doomsday” is expected to kick off shortly in the UK ahead of a planned May 1st 2026 release. “Avengers: Secret Wars” is tipped to follow a year later on May 7th 2027.
