In 2020 came the Netflix action hit “The Old Guard” which followed a team of immortal mercenaries on a revenge mission. A hit of the pandemic era, the title reportedly reached 72 million households in its first four weeks.

But many have been wondering what’s up with the sequel? The main cast including Charlize Theron, KiKi Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, etc. are all returning and are joined by Uma Thurman and Henry Golding in this outing.

Victoria Mahoney took over for Gina Prince-Bythewood as director on the follow-up and filming took place in the third quarter of 2022, but then…nothing. Netflix has stayed quiet on the film since.

Midway through last year, Charlize Theron offered some insight saying Netflix’s regime change saw post-production shut down just a few weeks into it. Then the strikes caused further delays, but things were picking back up and reshoots took place in October last year according to What’s on Netflix.

All good? Not quite. World of Reel is reporting today that more additional photography is being planned for the film with that filming expected to take place in early summer. They also say the film’s budget is “said to be well over $140 million now.”

If additional shooting is happening early Summer, the earliest we would likely see the film wouldn’t be until the Fall assuming the new footage can be added quickly. Otherwise a 2026 bow seems more likely.

Theron is next slated to play a rock climber and adrenaline junkie being hunted by a psychopath (Taron Egerton) stalking his human prey. That will shoot in Sydney early this year.
