The situation in Los Angeles remains fluid. When we discussed the fires last week, and their impact on the Oscar nominations, the recriminations were flying. If anything, that situation has only got worse. For the fires themselves, progress was made as the winds died down and additional help arrived from across the US and Canada to supplement LA firefighting teams.

However huge swathes of Los Angeles are still on fire. 1,000 structures have been destroyed and at least 150,000 residents forced to flee their homes. The list of Hollywood stars who have lost their homes is growing. It is estimated that more than 60 square miles of Los Angeles have been impacted. The high winds are expected to return today.

The flames were inching closer to Studio City and several major production facilities.

Meanwhile, the Producers Guild has postponed its 2025 PGA Awards nominations for film and television for the second time. The nominations announcement was delayed until last night but it has now been pushed back another week at least. The statement says this is “out of care and concern for those being affected by the fires”.

Traditionally these are seen as a bellweather for the Oscars. The Writers Guild of America and American Society of Cinematographers have also moved their nomination announcements.

In news that will surely be a relief to million, Meghan Markle has also announced that her new Netflix cooking show – With Love, Meghan – will now not premiere on Wednesday as originally planned.

It is now becoming increasingly clear that a number of fires were started deliberately. So-called “firebugs” with blowtorches and accelerants are being filmed across the city, many on the recieving end of some mob justice if residents catch them.

There are also reports of large gangs of highly organised criminals using teams of spotters and off road vehicles to loot evacuated houses.
