Just over a month away from its release, Marvel Studios’ “Captain America: Brave New World” has popped up on long-range box office tracking and looks set to easily have the biggest debut of the year to date.
Box-Office Theory reports that the film is projected to debut anywhere in the range of $81 million to $107 million for the three-day portion of its Presidents Day holiday weekend on February 14th.
The site doesn’t expect the film to have much in the way of legs, their total gross estimate being at around $240 million. The movie opens opposite “Paddington in Peru” in the U.S. with that movie projected to have a debut in the $16-25 million range.
The fourth “Captain America” film has released numerous trailers which have gradually been improving, but anticipation for the film doesn’t seem high and reports of numerous reshoots and behind-the-scenes adjustments haven’t helped the film’s cause.
Nonetheless, it marks the year’s first major tentpole film and pre-sales have not yet begun which will offer a better idea on the film’s economic prospects in the weeks to come. Good reviews and a strong short-term marketing campaign could considerably help its chances.
A new trailer for the film is rumored to be launching late next week.
