Back when the PS4 launched just over a decade ago in 2013, one of the biggest selling points of the console was that it allowed people to swap discs – physical media was still king at that point even as streaming was starting to encroach on its territory.
Cut to today and the Entertainment Retailers Association, using data from data from Nielsen/GFK and other sources, indicate that revenue from physical game sales in the UK in 2024 dropped nearly 35% from the year prior.
Physical game revenue in the region is seen as ‘collapsing’ with just £324.4 million generated by sales of boxed games in the UK last year across all platforms.
In comparison, the digital market across console, PC, mobile and tablet racked up more than ten times that amount – £4.29 billion – with just a 1% drop from the year before.
However, where that money is coming from varies. Console download sales were down 15%, PC download sales down 5%, mobile and tablet gaming role 2.6%, and subscription revenue rose 12%.
The best-selling game in the UK was “EA Sports FC 25” which sold 2.9 million copies with 80% of those sales being digital.
