“IT” and “The Flash” filmmaker Andy Muschietti recently appeared on Argentinian radio station Radio TU (via Reel Anarchy and The Gamer) where several topics came up.
Muschietti has long been attached to direct “Batman: The Brave and the Bold,” the new Batman movie set within James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe and likely to involve not just a new Batman but other members of the bat family.
In recent weeks, there’s been a surge of talk about Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” films being potentially retrofitted into the new DCU which would make Robert Pattinson’s Batman the new DCU’s Batman. It’s a possibility that previously seemed off the table.
In the new interview, Muschietti throws cold water on that idea and says the plan is for his Batman and Reeves’ Batman films to be entirely separate things:
“As everyone knows, the Batman featured in The Brave and the Bold will belong to the new DC universe. It’s quite obvious that Matt Reeves’ Batman is not part of this new universe. DC and Warner Bros. are moving forward with the second part of Reeves’ Batman series, which, as widely reported, is expected to release around 2027. This means the next Batman movie will take some time before it sees the light of day.”
Muschietti then spoke about how he’s continuing development on “The Brave and the Bold” which will not arrive anytime soon and has been postponed:
“Releasing two Batman films simultaneously would be counterproductive. What DC is doing is creating a strategy to ensure these two films don’t conflict with each other. Regarding my involvement in the project, there are good intentions for now. They want to do the movie with me, and I want to do it as well. I’m eager to work on the film. We are talking about the story and the tone.”
Muschietti also provided an update on the film adaptation of the PlayStation video game “Shadow of the Colossus,” a project that has been in development for a decade.
Muschietti says it is NOT “an abandoned project by any means, I love that film, there is a script that I like a lot.” He adds that the main issue facing it is financing:
“There are factors that have nothing to do with your hobby and desire to make it, but with how popular an intellectual property like this is,. ‘Shadow of the Colossus’ is a cult game, but to make a good film, there is a studio that puts the numbers and says how much it is worth to give the director 200, 150, or 100 million dollars. There are different versions of the film, and obviously, I want them to give me 200 million, but this is another factor to take into account.”
Neither project seems anywhere near close to heading into production at this point.
