Apple TV+ is set to premiere the second season of its acclaimed sci-fi psychological thriller series “Severance” in a little over a week, and today the reviews for the new run have gone up.
The first season received fourteen nominations at the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Drama Series and acting nominations for many of its stars. Thus the new season had high standards to live up to.
With 40 reviews counted, the second season has pulled in a perfect 100% and stunning 9.0/10 average rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The score stands at a stellar 85/100 on Metacritic from 20 reviews. In both cases, it scored higher than the first season by several points.
Here’s a sampling of reviews for the new season:
“Whatever the destination Severance is aiming for, the journey dramatizes the arbitrary rules and compartmentalized nature of modern work better than anything else on air.” – Alison Herman, Variety
“In season 2, ‘Severance’ forces both its characters and its viewers to confront our ugly tendency to assess another’s worth based primarily on how that person’s needs and desires align with our own.” – Kristen Baldwin, EW
“It’s hard not to love a show this beautiful and human, one that dives into both existential dilemmas and wackadoo dance breaks depending on its mood.” – Liz Shannon Miller, Consequence
“It makes for a season that’s frequently darker, less frequently amusing and not necessarily more satisfying — but one that hits, if anything, even more chillingly close to home.” – Angie Han, THR
“Severance has still got it. There are some storytelling hiccups here and there (as there were, to be fair, in Season One), but for the most part the new season is as exciting, surprising, darkly funny, and distinct as before.” – Alan Sepinwall, Rolling Stone
“It’s as if Erickson, Stiller, and Co. see the opportunity in front of them and stand determined to get the best out of their run with it; to put in the work; to value each step in the same way they hope audiences can.” – Ben Travers, Indiewire
“Just as you fret that this profoundly intelligent show is heading the way of X-Files, Lost and countless other WTF series that crawl so far into world-building fantasy they lose sight of any point, an episode will go deeper rather than just weirder.” – Bob Strauss, The Wrap
“It’s a tall order to follow-up on one of the best first seasons ever, but Severance season 2 exceeds expectations in every way.” – Amy West, Total Film
“What makes Severance stand out is not just its accomplished execution but the artistry and imagination with which the claustrophobic confines of an office are turned into an atmospheric, idiosyncratic world in its own right.” – Dan Elnav, Financial Times
The ten-episode second season of “Severance” premieres on Apple TV+ on January 17th with new episodes running through to March 21st.
