“Sonic the Hedgehog 3” may have come in second this weekend at the box-office, but it still helped push the franchise past a major milestone.

The third movie pulled in a further $21.2 million domestically and $51.2 million overseas, bringing the movie’s worldwide haul up to $336.3 million so far.

With that total, Paramount has announced that the films based on the beloved SEGA video game franchise have crossed the $1 billion mark – the first film pulled in $320 million in its run, the second snagged $405 million and third is on track to match or exceed the second when it’s over.

The news comes as Disney’s “Mufasa: The Lion King” continues its comeback, winning the weekend with a further $23.8 million domestically and $53.3 million overseas for a box-office total of $476.4 million worldwide.

Robert Eggers’ vampire film “Nosferatu” placed third with $13.2 million and has now just passed the $100 million mark globally with two-thirds of its business from the U.S. release.

“Moana 2” is closing in on the $1 billion mark as the film’s worldwide total stands at $960.5 million as of Sunday with just over half of that from overseas, while “Wicked” stands at $681.3 million worldwide with much of that from the U.S. release ($451M).
