The new year is off and running, with many analysts predicting that this year Hollywood will finally put COVID and the strikes behind it and power on to some decent numbers at the box office. Things are off to a pretty strong start.

Mufasa: The Lion King has overcome a slow start of its own to top the box office with $23.8 million domestically and $53.3 million overseas for a box-office total of $476.4 million worldwide. Disney will be very happy with that so far, but a $200 million budget means they might not be as happy as they could be. Disney’s cost control failures will still haunt them.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 came in second this weekend with a major box office milestone passed in the process. With $21.2 million domestically and $51.2 million overseas, and a worldwide haul of $336.3 million so far this means the franchise has crossed the $1 billion mark. This will be good news to Paramount who had a challenging year.

Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu fulfilled the role of ultimate counter-programming to all the children’s fare in theaters over the holidays. It grabbed $13.2 million and globally it passed the $100 million mark. The movie is also showing good legs and will also still have opportunities on PVOD and home sales to come.

Moana 2 came in fourth with another $12.4 million. That is also closing in on $1 billion mark. In fifth place was Wicked with $10.2 million despite an arrival on PVOD.
