HBO has cancelled its superhero movie satire “The Franchise” after just one season. The axe swings just over a month after the first season wrapped in late November.
The eight-episode showbiz comedy series followed the crew of an unloved film franchise and shined a light on the secret chaos inside the world of superhero moviemaking.
Himesh Patel, Aya Cash, Jessica Hynes, Billy Magnussen, Lolly Adefope, Darren Goldstein and Isaac Powell led the cast while Richard E. Grant and Daniel Brühl had recurring roles.
Reviews were positive but hardly exceptional, and the series failed to garner much in the way of eyeballs – never once cracking Nielsen’s Top 10 streaming rankings.
The project hailed from creator/executive producer Jon Brown along with executive producers Sam Mendes and Armando Iannucci – the latter having created “Veep” and “Avenue 5” for the cabler.
An HBO spokesperson says in a statement: “While we won’t be moving forward with another season, we look forward to collaborating with all of them in the future.”
