Speculation is high regarding who will serve as the villain in Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” sequel with no official indication coming from Reeves, DC Studios co-chief James Gunn or others.
Colin Farrell’s The Penguin will appear but is expected, like the first film, to be only in a small handful of scenes. It’s unlikely to be Barry Keoghan’s Joker, and the recent greenlighting of a Clayface film has rendered those rumors unlikely too.
Now, The Hot Mic’s Jeff Sneider is hearing that Mr. Freeze could be the villain of the new film, with Sneider clarifying that it’s just a rumor he has heard.
Reeves recently confirmed that the new film unfolds in winter so the setting would fit, but Reeves’ Batman world is aiming for a grounded approach to everything – making a villain in a sub-zero body suit with a cold gun perhaps a little too far-fetched.
The character wasn’t particularly a big one for Batman until the 1990s animated series episode “Heart of Ice” gave him a tragic backstory and turned him into a significant villain.
In live-action form, Arnold Schwarzenegger took on the role in Joel Schumacher’s “Batman & Robin” – a film so disastrous it seemed unlikely Mr. Freeze would ever show up on the big screen again.
Reeves has famously been taking his time getting the script for the new film ready with a film shoot in the back half of 2025 currently being targeted ahead of the film’s October 2027 release.
