Filmmaker Denis Villeneuve will wrap up his work on the “Dune” franchise with the upcoming third film “Dune: Messiah” which is expected to film in early 2026 for a 2027 release.

That doesn’t mean that it’s the end for Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary’s plans for the franchise as it seems the films could go on without the director.

Scooper Daniel Richtman (via World of Reel) reports that Warners is apparently considering moving forward with at least one more movie after ‘Messiah’ along with a second TV series after “Dune: Prophecy”.

WoR’s source claims Villeneuve was “rather irked by these potential plans to expand the franchise, with or without him”. Villeneuve has previously described the subsequent novels as being too ‘esoteric’ to adapt.

“Children of Dune” is the next book in the series (third after the original and ‘Messiah’) and takes place nine years after ‘Messiah’. Details of its story can’t be shared without spoiling events of ‘Messiah’.

HBO recently wrapped airing its spin-off series “Dune: Prophecy”. Reviews for it have been more mixed than the films, but viewership wise it went pretty strong.
