The sixth and penultimate episode of James Gunn’s Max animated series “Creature Commandos” has aired, and with if comes the very first official glimpse of Batman in the new DC Universe.
The brief glimpse, heavily in silhouette, is from a flashback scene in which Doctor Phosphorus (Alan Tudyk) looks up at his night club’s skylight to see the Dark Knight gazing down as lightning flashes outside.
The cameo confirms this Batman has white eyes, wears trunks and a fairly long cape, and is on the bulkier side. It would also seem to quell talk of Robert Pattinson’s Batman from the Matt Reeves films being retconned into the DC Universe.
DC Studios co-chief Gunn himself has subsequently gone on video record at Rotten Tomatoes talking about the scene and how the films and shows of this universe will skip Batman’s origin story:
“When they first gave it to me, we saw a lot more Batman. And I was saying, ‘I am not ready to commit to that, I am not ready to commit to that!’. So, I was like… more silhouette, more silhouette, more silhouette.
I think it’s a great way to show that Batman does exist, he already exists in this universe. We come to the Superman movie, we see that Superman already exists. He is already known by the people of Metropolis.
So, yes. We do not need to hear the origin story again. So, that is just the way to introduce that Batman is a part of this universe. He is an important part of this universe and he has an impact on it including defeating such pretty dangerous, scary people like Phosphorous who is pretty tough.
This is the DCU Batman… listen, I gotta tell you, I just love Batman, I love him! I’ve loved him since I was a little kid. He’s one of my favorite characters, I have gone on the record in the past when I was at Marvel saying, ‘My favorite character is Batman, I love him.’
We’re going to do great things with him, he’s the most popular superhero in the world and I can’t wait for people to see more of him, along with Superman… and together.”
It’s still unknown who will play Bruce Wayne/Batman in the DCU as the first Batman film in this shared universe, “The Brave and the Bold,” is still in early development.
